Abstract
The Zeeman effect of the 6438.47A line of the Cadmium lamp has been investigated using the Lummer Gehrcke interferometer with the applied magnetic field up to 0.831¢¥. When viewed in a direction normal to the magnetic field, the spectral line was splitted into three lines; the two outer components were polarized in a direction normal to the magnetic field and the central component was also polarized in a direction parallel to the field. The splitting was 0,16A apart in the magnetic field of 0.83T. The measurements agree quit well with the theoretical prediction based on the electronic transition of 51D2?,-51Pi. The experimental details concerning the interferometer are also represented.
